Municipality

The municipality of St. Niklaus is located in the middle of the Mattertal valley: more or less halfway between Visp and Zermatt, which are both just 20 minutes away by car. Even closer and easily accessible by car and public transport is the excellent family resort of Grächen. Gasenried is one of the many hamlets in the municipality.

In addition to its good location, St. Niklaus also scores points for its flawless infrastructure, beautiful natural surroundings and direct access to the magical Alps. Village life is lively with many sporting and cultural associations. The exceptional leisure infrastructure is impressive: Several tennis courts, football pitches and an indoor swimming pool are just part of it. The village is also home to a kindergarten, primary and secondary school.
St. Niklaus is also home to the largest employer in the Mattertal: Scintilla AG. The company, which belongs to the Bosch Group, manufactures electrical appliance accessories at its Valais site and sells them all over the world

Various craft businesses and the Migros-Partenaire and Denner grocery stores are located in the municipality. Other national and international retail chains are available in the Visp-Brig region

Public transport

St. Niklaus is easily accessible by public transport:
  • Train: St. Niklaus has a train station on the Matterhorn-Gotthard railroad line, which runs from Visp into the Mattertal valley. Trains run regularly and connect St. Niklaus with Visp (with connections to the national and international rail network) and Zermatt.
  • Bus: The region is served by PostBus connections that run from St. Niklaus to Grächen and surrounding areas such as Gasenried. There are regular bus connections to and from Grächen, particularly convenient for tourists and hikers.
  • Connection to Zermatt and Saas-Fee: There is a direct train connection from St. Niklaus to Zermatt and a combined train and bus connection to Saas-Fee.
